Dr. Usmani’s career spans senior roles on multiple high-profile boards. He is currently a Member of the Shariah Board of Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL)—formerly the Agricultural Development Bank of Pakistan—and has previously served for six years as in-house Shariah scholar at Meezan Bank Limited, ranked among the world’s leading Islamic banks. He advises TUV Austria, a certification body active in nearly twenty countries, and guides institutions such as the GMR Foundation in Fiji Islands and the LUMS Zakat Project on halal and Islamic finance matters. Simultaneously, he contributes to academic development as visiting faculty at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Lahore Garrison University, University of Central Punjab (UCP) and the National Institute of Banking & Finance (NIBAF), a subsidiary of the State Bank of Pakistan.
A sought-after international speaker, Dr. Usmani has presented research papers and conducted training programmes in Malaysia, Australia, the United States, Fiji Islands, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the UAE and beyond. His doctoral thesis on Islamic treasury operations in Islamic banks is regarded as a significant contribution to the literature, while his ongoing fatwa writing and policy work continue to influence best practices in Shariah-compliant finance and halal food certification worldwide.

Today he is Professor at INCEIF University Malaysia and sits on the highest echelons of regulatory and market bodies: Member of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Shariah Advisory Council, Chairman of the Shariah Board of Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and of the Labuan Financial Services Authority, and Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Committees of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB). His counsel extends across borders—he advises Dubai Islamic Bank, First Abu Dhabi Bank, Bank Muscat’s Meethaq Islamic Bank and Eiger Trading Advisors (UK), and serves on the Financial Regulation Advisory Council of Experts (FRACE) of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
A prolific author and trainer since 1999, he has structured landmark sukuk issuances as a registered Shariah Advisor with Malaysia’s Securities Commission and has guided boards and C-suites through the nuances of Islamic finance in markets spanning the Gulf, Europe and Africa. His contributions have earned Malaysia’s highest civil honour—the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) carrying the title “Datuk”—the Malaysian Islamic Personality Award, the Zaki Badawi Award for Excellence in Shariah Advisory, and the KLIFF 2016 award for Most Outstanding Individual Contribution to Islamic Finance.
